Pray for Prudence and Gift of Counsel
(When Confronted with Difficult Choices)
INTRODUCTION
WHAT IS Prudence and the Gift of Counsel?
Prudence and Gift of Counsel work together—but operate on different levels: one through human reason (elevated by grace), the other through direct supernatural guidance by the Holy Spirit.
In Catholic theology, both Prudence and Gift of Counsel is particularlyexplained by St Thomas Aquinas, the Gift of Counsel is explicitly the perfection of the virtue of Prudence. Prudence is the foundational cardinal virtue that anyone can cultivate through reason and habit; Counsel raises it to a higher, divine plane.
What Is Prudence?
Prudence (Latin: prudentia) is one of the four cardinal virtues (along with justice, fortitude, and temperance). It is the virtue of practical wisdom—the ability to discern the true good in any concrete situation and choose the right means to achieve it. It involves three acts: counsel (deliberating well), judgment (deciding correctly), and command (carrying it out).
Prudence relies on human reason, experience, memory, and moral principles (natural law and faith). Even non-Christians can practice a natural form of it. When infused by grace (in the state of sanctifying grace), it becomes “supernatural prudence” oriented toward eternal life.
Aquinas describes it as rectitude of practical reason: directing us toward our true end (God) in everyday choices. Prudence is your best reasoned judgment enlightened by faith.
What Is the Gift of Counsel?
The Gift of Counsel (also called “right judgment”) is one of the seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit received in Baptism and strengthened in Confirmation. It perfects the virtue of Prudence by making the soul docile to the direct promptings of the Holy Spirit.
While Prudence works through human deliberation and reason, Counsel allows prompt, intuitive, supernatural judgment—especially in difficult, doubtful, or complex moral situations where human wisdom alone falls short.
It helps us judge rightly not just for earthly success, but for sanctification and salvation, considering eternal realities.
Aquinas teaches that human reason is a “lower principle” moved and perfected by the higher Divine Reason (the Holy Spirit). Thus, Counsel is God counseling us directly, like a wise advisor guiding someone who cannot fully see the path. Counsel is Prudence raised to a supernatural level—the Holy Spirit Himself guiding our decisions.

SIGN OF THE CROSS
In the Name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
O Heavenly Father pour out Your Holy Spirit upon me to guide my thoughts, words, and actions, that I may see with clarity and choose with wisdom. Grant me prudence, to weigh each path with patience, to discern truth from false teachings, and to act with a heart anchored in Your goodness and mercy. Bestow upon me the gift of counsel, that I may listen deeply to Your word, and offer support to others with gentleness and truth.
When confusion clouds my mind, be my compass; when haste tempts my steps, be my stillness.
