Pray For Fallen-away Catholics
why pray
For Fallen-away Catholics
Catholics are called to pray for fallen-away Catholics (also called lapsed Catholics) for several deeply rooted reasons drawn from Scripture, Church teaching, and the lived experience of the faith.
Jesus commands us to “love one another as I have loved you” (John 13:34) and to pray even for those who seem far from God. Fallen-away Catholics are still beloved sons and daughters of the Church. Praying for their return is not judgment—it is mercy in action. It is one of the spiritual works of mercy: to pray for the living.
St. Paul tells us, “If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it” (1Corinthians 12:26). When a baptized Catholic drifts away, the whole Body of Christ is diminished. Prayer for their return restores unity and strengthens the entire Church.
The Church exists to bring souls to Christ and the fullness of the sacraments and the life of grace. Many fallen-away Catholics have never formally rejected the faith; often they have simply drifted because of hurt, confusion, busyness, or scandal.
The parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32) shows the Father’s longing for the return of the lost child. Prayer participates in that longing.
St. Monica prayed for 17 years for her son Augustine’s conversion. Her tears and prayers are credited with one of the greatest returns in Church history.
Jesus Himself prayed for Peter’s faith not to fail (Luke 22:32) and for the unity of all believers (John 17:20-21). We imitate Christ when they pray for those who have wandered.
Intercessory prayer is not magic; it is cooperation with God’s grace. It softens hearts (both the one who prays, and the one being prayed for), invites the Holy Spirit to act, and often leads to unexpected moments of reconciliation.
Countless modern stories—shared in parishes, at events like the Eucharistic Congress, and in books like “Return: How to Draw Your Child Back to the Church” show that persistent, loving prayer by family, friends, or prayer groups has brought people back to the sacraments.
Popes from St. John Paul II to Pope Francis have repeatedly urged Catholics to pray for and reach out to “the baptized who have drifted away.” In Evangelii Gaudium, Pope Francis writes that the Church must be a “field hospital” for those who are wounded or have left. Prayer is the first and most important response.
Every prayer, every Hail Mary, every Rosary, every Mass intention offered for fallen-away Catholics is a real participation in the Church’s mission of salvation. Our prayers truly matter.

DEDICATION
Eternal and merciful Father, I thank YOU for the gift of YOUR Divine Son who suffered, died and rose for the salvation of all mankind. I also thank YOU for my Catholic faith and ask YOUR help to grow in faith, hope and love by prayer, by acts of mercy, sacrifice and penance, by reflecting on YOUR Word, and by frequent participation in the Holy Eucharist.
PRAYER FOR PARTICULAR PERSON(S)
(Through the intersession of St Monica)
Loving Father, YOU gave Saint Monica a spirit of selfless love manifested in her constant prayer for the conversion of her son Augustine. Inspired by her boundless confidence in your power to move hearts, and by the success of her prayer, we ask the grace to imitate her perseverance in our prayer for <name> my <relationship> (add more names and relationships if you need) who no longer share(s) the intimate life of YOUR Catholic family.
Grant through our prayer and witness that <she/he/they> may be open to the promptings of YOUR Holy Spirit and return to the loving union with YOUR Church. Grant also that our prayer is always hopeful and that we may never allow ourselves to judge <her/him/them>, for we firmly believe that YOU alone know the human heart.
We make this prayer through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
Jesus, I trust in you!

PRAYER FOR ALL LAPSED CATHOLICS
Almighty Father, YOU desire not the death of sinners, but that they may be converted and live. Pour out upon us YOUR mercy and hear the prayers of YOUR servant. Soften the hearts of YOUR children who have strayed from the true path which YOU established for their salvation.
They are now forgetful of their duties as Catholics and pursue the pleasures of the world. Grant that they may quickly return to the practice of every Christian virtue, so that their lives may shine with the integrity of faith, the fervor of piety, and the zeal of charity. Restore them all to Your sacraments and the life of Your grace, through the merits of the Most Precious Blood of Your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

PRAYER FOR ALL APOSTATE CATHOLICS
Holy Trinity One Loving and Merciful God, look down with pity and compassion on all those souls who have gone away from the paths of truth and unity, and from the one-fold of the one Shepherd, Jesus Christ, into the by-paths of error. O, bring them back to YOU and to your Church.
Dispel their darkness by your heavenly light; take off the veil from before their eyes, with which the common enemy has blindfolded them. Take away from them the spirit of obstinacy, pride, and self-conceit. Give them a humble and docile heart. Give them a strong desire to find out your truth, and a strong grace to enable them to embrace it. We make this prayer through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

CONCLUDE WITH PSALM 23 (Optional)
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside still waters.
He restores my soul; he leads me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
Yes, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff, comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
[℣] May the divine assistance remain always with us, [℟] and may the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. [Ⱥ] Amen.
