Pray for the Religious
Pray For The Religious

In Catholic teaching and practice, “the Religious” (often capitalized this way in Church documents and devotions) refers to men and women who profess the evangelical counsels (poverty, chastity, obedience) in religious vows or consecrated life—priests, brothers, sisters, monks, and nuns in religious orders or congregations.

They form a distinct vocation within the Church, separate from the diocesan clergy (who serve in parishes under a bishop) or the laity. We are encouraged to pray for them regularly, and this is not a fringe practice but one rooted in Scripture, papal teaching, and the Church’s understanding of the Body of Christ.

They are essential “laborers in the harvest” who serve the entire Church. Jesus Himself told His disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore, ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest” (Matthew 9:37-38).

The Religious dedicate their whole lives to prayer, evangelization, education, care for the poor, the sick, and the marginalized. Without them, many works of mercy and spiritual formation would not exist. The whole People of God (laity included) shares responsibility for supporting these vocations through prayer.

Their vocation is demanding and under spiritual attack. Consecrated life involves radical self-giving—leaving family, possessions, and marriage for the sake of the Kingdom. They often face burnout, loneliness, temptation, public scandals, or even persecution and unfair treatment within the Church itself.

Pope Francis has explicitly asked the faithful to pray for religious sisters and consecrated women, thanking them for their “mission and courage” and urging prayer so they can “continue to find new responses to the challenges of our times.”

Prayer sustains their perseverance and fosters new vocations. The Church teaches that persistent prayer is the primary way the laity promotes and strengthens consecrated life (see Pope St. John Paul II in Ecclesia in America).

It is an act of gratitude and solidarity. Religious are described as “prayer warriors for the Church” and “Spouses of Christ” who make enormous sacrifices. Praying for them is a concrete way for lay Catholics to support those who have given everything for Christ and His Church.

We pray for the Religious because the Church sees them as vital to her mission, because their calling is both beautiful and difficult, and because Scripture and the Church explicitly invite every baptized person to intercede for those God calls to this state of life.
