Prayer to St Jude for Financial Help
TO ST JUDE FOR FINANCIAL HELP—THE REAL STORY

St. Jude Thaddeus (also called Jude the Apostle) is one of the Twelve Apostles and is traditionally known as the patron saint of hopeless causes, desperate situations, and things almost despaired of. This title isn’t tied to any specific financial miracle from his lifetime in the New Testament. Instead, it comes from historical and devotional reasons: His name in many languages (Jude/Judas/Thaddeus) is very similar to Judas Iscariot’s, the apostle who betrayed Jesus.

Early Christians often hesitated to pray to him, fearing they might accidentally invoke the wrong person. As a result, St. Jude became the “saint of last resort” — the one people turned to only when all other hope seemed lost. Because he was so rarely asked for help, tradition holds that he eagerly intercedes powerfully for those who do call on him in dire need.

Financial struggles naturally fall under “hopeless causes” or “desperate situations,” so Catholics (and many others) have long turned to him for help with money problems, unemployment, debt, or financial breakthroughs. There are now many widely used prayers specifically for “urgent financial help” or “financial miracles” addressed to him.

The story that made the connection especially popular: Danny Thomas

The association with financial help became particularly well-known in the 20th century because of the experience of entertainer Danny Thomas (the comedian and actor, father of actress Marlo Thomas). In the late 1930s, Thomas was a struggling young performer in Detroit. He and his wife were expecting their first child, work was scarce, and they were nearly broke — he had only about $7 left, which he needed for upcoming hospital bills.

One night in a Detroit church, he knelt before a statue of St. Jude and prayed something like: “Show me my way in life, and I will build you a shrine.” He placed his last $7 in the poor box as an act of faith. The very next day, he received a job offer that paid ten times that amount. His career soon took off, leading to fame in radio, TV, and film. True to his promise, Thomas fulfilled his vow by founding St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis (opened in 1962), which treats children with catastrophic illnesses — often described as “hopeless” medical cases — and does so at no cost to families. The hospital itself is named for the saint of hopeless causes, but its origin story began with Thomas’s desperate prayer for financial and professional help.

This real-life answered prayer has inspired countless people to invoke St. Jude specifically for money-related needs, and thousands have shared personal testimonies of financial relief, job opportunities, debt resolution, or unexpected provision after praying to him.

There isn’t an ancient biblical or legendary “financial miracle” story about St. Jude himself, but his role as patron of desperate situations has made him a go-to intercessor for financial hardship for centuries — and Danny Thomas’s dramatic, well-documented experience turned that into a widely recognized modern example. Many Catholics today include him in novenas or prayers when facing money troubles because of this tradition.
